Financial Planning Traineeship – one year on

This time last year I was delighted to write my first blog for 1825, announcing the launch of our Financial Planning Traineeship. It’s been an incredible first year for the 1825 Academy, and for our trainees who are now all well on their way to becoming fully-fledged financial planners.

Going back to basics, 1825 is here to help our clients make sound financial decisions and plan for their future. That’s only possible because our financial planners are qualified, experienced experts. And that’s exactly what we’re helping our trainees to become.

A busy 12 months

From helping clients to passing exams, I’m very proud of everything they’ve done this year. Here are some of the highlights:

• Over 330 applicants to our traineeship programs in 2015 and 2016 • Development of our structured development programs in Financial Services, Client Relationships, Paraplanning and Financial Planning • Operational placements providing guidance and support to clients, paraplanners and financial planners • Broadening Horizons experiential placements across our financial planning business in risk and compliance, proposition and business services development • Structured qualification support, leading to a 100% pass rate first time on CII Regulated Diploma in Financial Planning exams for most trainees • 1-2-1 mentoring program offering support and coaching along the way • Opportunity to relocate to an 1825 regional financial planning business across the UK

Exam success

Our first cohort of trainees are now over half way to achieving the qualifications required to complete their Diploma in Finical Planning, and have had excellent pass rates in their exams so far – often exceeding the sector benchmarks.

We’re committed to ensuring that the achievement of these qualifications is a top priority, and the trainees are supported with exam preparation workshops and given dedicated study time each week.

Highlights and surprises

The trainees have been very busy this last year, but they did manage to spare a few minutes to share their experience:

Jordan_cropJordan – “My experience within the first year was as challenging as it was enjoyable. The exam support and guidance throughout the year from the Academy has been excellent and they’re always on hand to give you a nudge in the right direction.

Relocating to Edinburgh was the highlight of my 2016. As I have never lived anywhere except Leeds before, this was a big step for me but a rewarding opportunity. I’m in a great city, great workplace and I’ve met some great people inside and outside of work.”

Patrick – “I’ve had the chance to gain invaluable experience in financial planning and I’ve experienced first-hand why it’s so important to seek professional advice on complex areas.

Whilst on my client relationship placement I was speaking to clients every day and learned how to really understand their objectives. Getting experience of this so early in my career, whilst being supported by an expert mentor, is exactly why I joined the traineeship.”

Gillian Gourlay

Gillian – “It’s been great to work both in Edinburgh and in our Leeds Regional Office over the year. It’s meant that I’ve gained good exposure to the different elements that make up a financial planning firm and has provided me with a really solid foundation to build on in the second year of the traineeship.”

Yasmin – “Mentor support and different placement teams have meant I always know there is someone there to support me if I’m finding anything challenging. But what I’ve most enjoyed is being able to work on real life client work and see how 1825 help their clients – that’s what it’s all about after all!”

Michelle – “My first year on the Traineeship has been a very rewarding experience. The highlight for me has been working closely with financial planners and helping them with fact-find meetings.

Meeting clients face-to-face has provided me with a greater insight into my future role and I am so pleased to gain this experience a year into the programme. Can’t wait to see what the next year brings!”

What’s next?

Over the next 12 months the traineeship program really starts to ramp up. We’ll begin to focus on more complex financial planning and the trainees will complete placements in Client Support and Paraplanning.

We really believe in the importance of building the next generation of financial planners, and I think our trainees are making great progress. But we can’t do it alone – the demand for financial advice is growing so it’s up to all financial planning firms to consider how they can develop new talent. I’m always happy to discuss how we set up our program so please get in touch if you want to know more –

If you’re interested in joining the one of our traineeships, remember to keep an eye on our careers page for when applications re-open for our 2017/18 intake.
